The South African Football Association (Safa) is concerned that the ongoing xenophobic attacks in the country might affect PSL teams participating in Caf club competitions negatively.
Acting Safa CEO Russell Paul says national teams declining to play against Bafana Bafana in protest of the xenophobia could spill over to clubs refusing to play SA teams in Caf Champions league and Confederations Cup.
“There have been many concerns raised about whether this is going to spill to the Caf Confederation and the Champions League. We don’t know. Only time will tell,” Paul was quoted by DailySun.
“It is not a sport issue, not a football issue in particular. It is a political matter that needs to be addressed at the highest political level. And we hope that before we get there (Caf competitions), that a political solution would have been found.”
Mamelodi Sundowns are set to travel to Seychelles to face Cote d’Or FC in the Caf Champions League on Saturday.
GladAfrica Championship side TS Galaxy will welcome CNaPS from Madagascar for Caf Confederation Cup, while Bidvest Wits will be away in Eswatini (Swaziland) to meet Young Buffaloes in the same competition.
