An attempt by the police to reconcile two men went south as one ended up assaulting the other resulting in an instant arrest and an assault charge.
Mbuso Mnisi had been called to the Mbabane police station to talk things out with Charles Mbhamali over several misunderstandings that were pending. However, upon arrival and seeing Mbhamali, Mnisi lost his cool and ended up assaulting him.
Appearing before Senior Magistrate Sifiso Vilakati, Mnisi told the court that Mbhamali had been very disrespectful towards him in that he once ‘kidnapped’ his girlfriend for three days.
In a different incident, Mbhamali allegedly broke the windows of his house which added to the bad blood between the two. On the day in question in the presence of police officers, Mnisi reportedly assaulted Mbhamali with a closed fist on the body and further strangulated him.
Senior Magistrate Vilakati condemned Mnisi’s behaviour and told him to have reported all the incidents between him and Mnisi instead of taking matters into his own hands, especially in the presence of the police.
Mnisi apologised to the court stating that “when I saw him, I couldn’t hold control myself, it wasn’t my intention, I plead for the court’s leniency.”
He was sentenced to five months in prison with an option of a fine of E500.
However, the sentence was wholly suspended for six months on the condition that he did not commit a similar offence in that duration.
