As the nation gets ready to enjoy the Buganu Festival, safety has been punted as a serious concern.

Dumisa Dlamini from Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (SMVAF) says the prevalence of pedestrian fatalities is high during the Buganu season.

Dlamini said this during a press briefing centred on promoting domestic tourism ahead of the Eswatini Tourism Authority’s (ETA) Events of Calendar Activation, set to be held at Mpumalanga on Tuesday.

He stated that pedestrians are the most problematic and cause accidents during the Buganu season increasing road accidents.

Pedestrians are reported to buy the alcoholic beverage next to the road where they imbibe it and end up passing out on the road, in the process endangering the lives of motorists.

“When we look at the number of accidents on the roads, we found that they are mostly caused by pedestrians resulting in motorists being vulnerable. Our message is that pedestrians should stay away from the roads once they have consumed alcohol, motorists should not drink and drive, all of these actions have repercussions,” said Dlamini.
