Eswatini could survive Cyclone Freddy but rains are expected over the country

Eswatini is safe from Cyclone Freddy but, rains are still expected in the country over the weekend.

According to Meteorologist Phephisa Sihlongonyane from Eswatini Meteorological Services, the cyclone made landfall in Vilankulu, which is situated on the eastern coast of Mozambique at Inhambane Province on Thursday morning.

It caused torrential rains and strong winds of about 220km/h in the region. It is expected to track westwards towards Zimbabwe. Sihlongonyane said the country will still receive rainfall caused by a frontal system which may couple with the spiral bands of the cyclone.

Meanwhile, the PS in the Deputy Prime Minister’s office Melusi Masuku said people should stay vigilant, particularly those in the northern Hhohho and Lubombo regions. He said those who would need assistance should call the emergency number 116.

According to Africanews.com, the cyclone has claimed seven lives in Madagascar.
