On Thursday morning, South Africans woke up to the news that convicted Facebook rapist Thabo Bester has been brought back home from Tanzania.

Both the eNCA and SABC reported that an aircraft believed to be carrying the convicted Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana landed shortly before 4 am at Lanseria Airport.

At around 5 am, pictures of members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) escorting two individuals believed to be the pair were already circulating on social platforms.

The two heavily guarded individuals had their faces covered and were loaded in a police van. The South African media reported that Bester has been taken to the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison.

The latest developments happened hours after the Ministry of Police and Justice and Correctional Services issued a joint statement to the effect that they will give an update on the deportation of the two.

The update, according to the joint statement, is expected to be shared at a media briefing on Thursday.

Six days ago, an official delegation from South Africa comprising senior officials from the Police, Justice and Correctional Services and Home Affairs, departed for Tanzania to meet with their counterparts and engage in the process required to bring back the fugitive and his accomplice Dr Magudumana.
