Torrential rains hammered Matsapha on Thursday, unleashing chaos at KaMahhala traffic circle, leaving motorists stranded for hours as the roundabout transformed into a turbulent lake, with water cascading from all over and overflowing drains.
The deluge, which hit with little warning, overwhelmed the Mahhala’s drainage system, leaving the circular thoroughfare submerged in muddy water. Traffic crawled to a standstill, as vehicles struggled to navigate the flooded roadway.
Some motorists, overwhelmed by the rising water, opted to stop their cars while waiting for the levels to decrease. The chaos extended beyond the traffic circle, wreaking havoc on surrounding businesses and even creeping into residential areas.

Several shops along the perimeter bore the brunt of the flooding, with their entrances and interiors engulfed by muddy water. The storm’s fury continued to nearby settlements, and strong winds ripped roofs from houses, leaving families exposed to the elements.
Electricity poles succumbed to the onslaught, plunging entire neighbourhoods into darkness, further deepening the distress. Some witnesses said fallen trees added to the chaos, blocking vital access roads and posing additional danger to pedestrians and motorists.
Matsapha Town Council cautioned on the situation. “Council notes the damage that has been caused by the heavy rain we experienced this afternoon. We would like to urge motorists to exercise caution as they move in and out of the town. The council will continue to work hard to ensure that the situation goes back to normal. We greatly appreciate your patience and cooperation,” reads a statement issued by the Matsapha Town Council.
The council further added that the full extent of the damage was being assessed by their teams. Reports suggest significant that there may be costs to both infrastructure and property.
