Luphohlo Dam overflow sparks caution

By Siphesihle Dlamini

The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) has issued a public notice following the overflow of the Luphohlo Dam, a critical hydropower and water supply source in Eswatini.

According to EEC, the overflow began late Sunday night and has since heightened water levels downstream in the Lusushwana River, posing potential risks to nearby communities.

In a statement released on Monday morning, the EEC confirmed, “The Luphohlo Dam has reached full capacity and is now overflowing.

This overflow is expected to result in increased water flow downstream,” and has revealed it may particularly affecting areas from Mantabeni through Mantenga to Matsapha.”

The dam, located in the Hhohho region near Siphocosini kaNyama, plays a vital role in providing hydroelectric power and water resources.

However, its overflow emphasizes the challenges posed by heavy rainfall and the natural dynamics of water management systems.

“All excess water will spill over, leading to a slight rise in water levels downstream,” the EEC explained.

The EEC has urged residents and communities along the Lusushwana River to exercise extreme caution during this period.

The increased water flow and faster currents present significant hazards, particularly to those living near the riverbanks.

“We are prioritizing public safety and strongly advise everyone to avoid crossing flooded areas or rivers.

Fast-moving water can be deceptively dangerous,” the EEC emphasized in their advisory.

To mitigate risks, the EEC has outlined several safety measures:

The EEC has reiterated the importance of this dam in ensuring the country’s energy and water needs are met.

“Luphohlo is one of the key dams in Eswatini’s infrastructure, and its current situation underscores the need for ongoing monitoring and public cooperation during such events.”

EEC further assured the public that it is monitoring the overflow and working with relevant authorities to ensure safety and minimize risks.

“Your safety is our priority,” the EEC reiterated in their notice, encouraging all affected parties to remain vigilant and take precautions.
