An efficient public sector is the backbone of any thriving economy – PM

Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has emphasized that the transformation of Eswatini’s economy depends on an efficient public sector that delivers services effectively and transparently.

Dlamini said this when delivering his remarks at the colloquium with State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) held at Happy Valley Hotel He highlighted that government institutions must operate with accountability and innovation to stimulate economic growth and job creation.

“An efficient public sector is the backbone of any thriving economy,” Dlamini said. He pointed out that inefficiency, corruption, and bureaucracy hinder national development.

The Premier stressed that the government is committed to modernizing governance structures, digitalizing service delivery, and strengthening public sector accountability to ensure that SOEs contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress.

The Prime Minister outlined several steps aimed at enhancing the performance of public enterprises, including the adoption of global best practices in corporate governance,

the reduction of reliance on government subsidies, and the integration of technology to streamline operations.

He stated that all government agencies must align their strategies with national development priorities, ensuring that they play a central role in economic transformation.

“We cannot afford to have public institutions that are slow and unresponsive to the needs of our people.

If we are to achieve a prosperous Eswatini, we must have a public sector that works efficiently, transparently, and is driven by results,” he added.

As part of this vision, the government has pledged to eliminate unnecessary expenditure, enhance revenue collection, and introduce mechanisms to track the performance of SOEs.

The Prime Minister urged leaders within these institutions to take ownership of reforms, work collaboratively with the private sector, and adopt digital transformation strategies to make government services more accessible and effective.

Moreover, Dlamini called on all stakeholders to embrace the challenge and ensure that government institutions become enablers of development rather than obstacles to progress.
