The government of Eswatini has expressed immense pride in the election of former Cabinet Minister Moses Vilakati as the Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) in the African Union Commission.
The announcement was made by Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo on a statement where he highlighted the significance of Vilakati’s appointment in advancing Eswatini’s representation in Africa’s top decision-making body on critical developmental issues.
“This election represents an unprecedented milestone for the Kingdom of Eswatini, firmly positioning the country at the forefront of African leadership in key developmental sectors,” said Nxumalo.
He emphasized that Vilakati’s victory in a highly competitive election at the 46th Meeting of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is a reflection of his extensive expertise and leadership in agriculture, environmental conservation, and sustainable tourism.

The election saw Vilakati emerge as the clear winner, securing overwhelming support from member states, an achievement the government considers a testament to his credibility and the nation’s growing influence on the continent.
Vilakati brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having served in various leadership capacities.
His background includes a Master of Science degree in Agriculture (International Development) from California Polytechnic State University in the United States and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Eswatini.
Over the years, he has served as Minister of Agriculture in 2013 and later as Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs from 2018 to 2023.
Beyond government roles, his experience extends to academia and project leadership, including his tenure as Project Director at the Eswatini Water and Agricultural Development Enterprise (EWADE) and his time as a lecturer at the University of Eswatini.
The government expressed confidence in Vilakati’s ability to champion Africa’s agricultural transformation, rural development, and sustainable environmental policies.
“His vision aligns with Africa’s agenda for a transformed, innovative, and diversified agricultural sector that ensures food security and nutrition under sustainable environmental and climate conditions,” said Nxumalo.

His appointment comes at a time when the African Union is prioritizing food security, climate resilience, and sustainable economic development, issues that have long been central to Eswatini’s national agenda.
When acknowledging the continental support that led to Vilakati’s appointment, the government extended its gratitude to the 36 African nations that endorsed his candidacy.
The election outcome was said to reflect a recognition of Eswatini’s leadership in enhancing sustainable agricultural and environmental practices, aligning with broader African Union objectives.
“Congratulations to Mr. Vilakati on this prestigious appointment. His success is a national triumph, and the people of Eswatini stand firmly behind him as he embarks on this remarkable journey of service to Africa,” said Nxumalo.
