The Kingdom of Eswatini has secured a significant diplomatic milestone with the election of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu as the new President of the Bureau of the Council of Ministers of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS).
Government Spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo confirmed the announcement in a statement where he emphasized the prestige and strategic importance of this appointment for both Eswatini and the wider OACPS community.
Minister Shakantu will assume leadership of the Council of Ministers meeting scheduled to take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 20 February 2025.
The OACPS, an organization comprising 79 member states from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific, plays a critical role in promoting sustainable development, economic cooperation, and global market integration for its members.

The Council of Ministers functions as the organization’s primary decision-making body, responsible for implementing key directives established at the OACPS Summit.
“Minister Shakantu’s election presents a valuable opportunity for the Kingdom of Eswatini to shape the future trajectory of the OACPS and champion the interests of its member states across diverse sectors,” stated Nxumalo.
The Bureau of the OACPS Council of Ministers consists of nine members, including six regional representatives, the newly elected President, and both the outgoing and incoming Presidents as full members.
This structure ensures that all regions within the OACPS have representation in shaping policies that impact trade, sustainable development, and economic partnerships with global actors, particularly the European Union.
The Kingdom by securing the position of President of the Bureau, has elevated its diplomatic standing on the global stage, reinforcing its commitment to international cooperation and multilateral engagement.
Government expressed that the appointment of Minister Shakantu signifies Eswatini’s growing influence within global policymaking structures.
It offers the country a platform to advocate for the economic and developmental priorities of the African, Caribbean, and Pacific regions.
The government further expressed confidence in her ability to lead the OACPS Bureau with dedication, ensuring that the interests of member states remain at the forefront of policy discussions.

Minister Shakantu’s leadership is anticipated to play a key role in shaping strategies that address critical issues such as trade agreements, climate resilience, and economic integration.
