Thousands of women under the Lutsango regiment gathered at Buhleni Royal Residence this past weekend for the much-anticipated first session of the annual Buganu Ceremony.
The vibrant cultural event, which celebrates the marula fruit and its significance in Eswatini’s traditions, saw Lutsango being presented with beautiful gifts from Their Majesties, a gesture that was met with joy and appreciation.
Among the gifts distributed were the traditional lihiya (cloth) and marula-made products, including soap and oil, which are cherished by the women who partake in the festival.

This customary gesture has become a hallmark of the event, drawing even more women to the ceremony each year, eager to receive the tokens of appreciation from Their Majesties.
“Sikhuta liBayethe kuye gogo naso Silo. Lihle kakhulu lihiya lalonyaka, Siyabonga kakhulu,” said Tenesi Fakudze from Mayiwane, expressing her gratitude for the gifts. Another recipient, Thabsile Masuku-Dlamini from Mphofu, shared similar sentiments, highlighting how the annual event fosters unity and appreciation among women.
Following the distribution of gifts, the women proceeded to queue for food, marking the next phase of the festivities.
With full energy and high spirits, they then took to the dance arena later in the evening, where they showcased their vibrant dancing skills, an integral part of the celebration.
The rhythmic clapping, singing, and synchronized movements created a mesmerizing spectacle, reflecting the deep cultural roots of the event.
The Buganu Ceremony, held annually at Buhleni before proceeding to Hlane Royal Residence, is one of Eswatini’s most treasured traditions.
It not only serves as a platform for women to celebrate their cultural identity but also promotes the use of marula in various products, highlighting its economic and medicinal value.
