His Majesty King Mswati III visited the Maguga Hydro Power Station on Saturday, where he officially endorsed the expansion of this essential energy facility.
The upgrades aim to increase the station’s electricity generation capacity from 20 megawatts to an impressive 30 megawatts, highlighting Eswatini’s dedication to securing its own energy resources.
Joined by the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Prince Lonkhokhela, the King toured the dam and addressed recent challenges faced by the project, particularly those related to climate change’s effects on water levels and power generation.

The Maguga Hydro Power Station, located strategically on the Komati River, is vital for meeting the nation’s energy demands while also supporting agricultural irrigation.
Initially designed for automatic operation, the station has been a fundamental part of Eswatini’s energy infrastructure since its establishment, effectively regulating water flow to ensure both electricity production and agricultural support.
With the increased capacity, the expanded project is expected to help meet peak electricity demand, thus improving the overall stability of the country’s energy supply.
This expansion comes at a crucial time as the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) seeks partners to help complete the project, inviting collaborations that will further promote sustainable energy initiatives.
Minister Lonkhokhela emphasized the significance of such partnerships in addressing infrastructure challenges and speeding up Eswatini’s path to energy self-sufficiency.
“Today marks a key milestone not only for the Maguga Hydro Power Station but also for the future of electricity in Eswatini,” said King Mswati III during his visit.
“By expanding our capacity, we take a giant stride towards ensuring that our energy needs are met sustainably and efficiently.”
It should be noted that as climate change continues to challenge global power generation, the expansion of the Maguga Hydro Power Station reflects Eswatini’s resilience and proactive approach to energy management.
By harnessing the natural resources of the Komati River, the project exemplifies a harmonious balance between energy needs and environmental stewardship.
