Cultural festivals and events
Buganu Festival
The Buganu Festival typically takes place between mid-February and May each year, as the Marula season begins with the fall of the green marula fruits.
Once these fruits hit the ground, they are gathered by the women and children of Eswatini and stored until they ripen to a creamy yellow colour.
The fruits are then placed into water with sugar added, and the mixture is left to ferment and distil into marula beer, known locally as “Buganu.”
This potent alcoholic brew is a central feature of the festival, symbolizing the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. In 2025, the Marula Festival will be held in two major locations:
at the Buhleni Royal Residence, it was held from Friday, February 21 to Sunday, February 23 at the Buhleni Royal Residence in Eswatini.
The second leg will be held at Hlane Royal Residence in March. This event marks the culmination of weeks of preparation, as local communities gather their marula harvest and prepare to present the fruit and the beer to the royal family.
The festival’s significance goes beyond the harvest itself; it represents the bond between emaSwati and Their Majesties, as well as the timeless connection to their ancestors.
Buganu Festival stands as one of Eswatini’s most important cultural events. It is a celebration of the harvest, the bond between the royal family and the people, and the timeless traditions that define the Swazi way of life.
Through song, dance, and the sharing of marula beer, emaSwati come together to honour their history, their culture, and the spirit of unity that continues to define this remarkable nation.
The Marula Festival is not just a celebration of a fruit; it is a celebration of the resilience, strength, and unity of the Swazi people.
With the support of the royal family, the continued development of marula-based products, and the vibrant celebrations that mark the event, the Marula Festival will remain an enduring symbol of Swazi culture for generations to come.
