But momentum shifted on the stroke of the interval when Casemiro, already booked, was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Andrey Santos, leaving United to play the entire second half a man light. Chelsea eventually pulled one back through Trevoh Chalobah late on, but despite mounting pressure, the visitors couldn’t break United’s near 13-year stranglehold over them at Old Trafford.
The win, though nervy, marked Amorim’s first back-to-back Premier League home victories since taking charge. While United’s second-half display was far from convincing, the three points provide much-needed relief and keep Chelsea’s long wait for an Old Trafford triumph alive.
