Local motorists await fuel price verdict

Eswatini motorists are waiting for the government’s next fuel price announcement following a sharp reduction in fuel prices in South Africa, which has raised expectations of possible relief at local pumps.

From midnight on Wednesday, South African motorists will pay significantly less for fuel after the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced a R2.01 per litre drop in 93-octane petrol and a R1.96 per litre reduction in 95-octane petrol.

Diesel prices will decrease by between R3.13 and R3.58 per litre, while illuminating paraffin will drop by R6.97 per litre.

The department attributed the cuts to lower international oil prices, a relatively stable rand against the US dollar and a reduction in the general fuel levy.

As Eswatini’s fuel pricing system is closely influenced by movements in the South African market,

the announcement has triggered anticipation among motorists and businesses who are hoping for similar adjustments locally.

However, Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy Communications Officer Sikelela Khoza said it is still too early to determine whether Eswatini will follow suit.

He said the developments in South Africa do have an impact on Eswatini, but cautioned against speculation on the outcome of the local review process.

“It would be premature to say what will happen for Eswatini regarding the changes announced in South Africa, even though they affect us,” said Khoza.

He added that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy and the Cabinet are currently seized with the matter.

“The ministry and Cabinet are on it. Any changes or updates will be communicated in the usual manner through an official press statement,” he said.
