Eswatini and the United Kingdom are looking to strengthen their longstanding relationship through expanded trade, improved migration cooperation and initiatives aimed at opening up new economic opportunities for local businesses and young entrepreneurs.
This emerged during a meeting between Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Senator Pholile Shakantu and British High Commissioner to Eswatini His Excellency Colin Wells, where the two sides explored ways to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
Eswatini and the UK share historical ties dating back centuries, with both countries now seeking to build on this relationship through practical programmes that promote bilateral cooperation, strengthen commercial links and address migration matters.
Migration featured prominently in the discussions, with the two sides exploring ways to support safe, orderly and regular movement between Eswatini and the UK. They also acknowledged the importance of people-to-people connections and the need for continued dialogue on migration-related issues.
The discussions come as both countries seek to translate their diplomatic relationship into tangible benefits for their citizens, particularly through greater economic engagement and improved access to international markets.
Building on the success of the UK–Eswatini Business Seminar held during the Eswatini International Trade Fair (EITF) 2026, the meeting also considered ways to help Eswatini businesses take greater advantage of opportunities in the UK market.
A key area of focus was the SACUM–UK Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), which provides for tariff-free access to the UK market for eligible goods, subject to the agreement’s requirements.
