A 32-year-old man from Eswatini was arrested on Thursday morning after being found in
possession of dagga valued at approximately R3.3 million. The dramatic arrest took place along
the R40 Road near Nelspruit following an intelligence-driven police operation.
According to Mpumalanga police, members of the White River K9 Unit received a tip-off about
a vehicle allegedly transporting dagga. The vehicle, bearing Gauteng registration plates, was
reportedly travelling along the N4 highway when officers mobilised a take-down operation.
Police spokesperson Colonel confirmed that the suspect’s vehicle was intercepted
around 07h30 am on the R40.

“Upon stopping and searching the vehicle, officers discovered 21
bales of compressed dagga weighing a total of 548 kilograms,” the spokesperson said.
The confiscated drugs carry an estimated street value of R3.3 million. Authorities believe the
dagga was destined for distribution networks in Gauteng.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody and charged with possession and dealing in
dagga. He appeared before the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where his case was
postponed allowing for further investigation.
The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, praised the swift action of the White River K9
Unit. “This arrest is a clear demonstration of our commitment to dismantling drug trafficking
syndicates. We will continue to act decisively against those who transport and distribute illegal
substances in our province,” she said.
Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing, including efforts to determine whether the
suspect is linked to a broader cross-border drug trafficking ring.
The arrest has once again highlighted concerns about the N4 corridor, which law enforcement
officials say has increasingly become a key route for the movement of illegal drugs between
Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa.
The accused is expected to apply for bail at his next court appearance.
