The Ministry of Home Affairs National Identity (ID) department has resumed operations.

This is a development that was noted by this publication on Thursday last week and comes at a time when parents and guardians prepare to process identification documents for themselves and their children.

When reached for comment, Ministry of Home Affairs Communications Officer Mlandvo Dlamini said further details would be communicated through an official statement expected to be released today.

He confirmed, however, that ID services had resumed under a project currently being piloted by the ministry’s technical team.

Dlamini indicated that the pilot initiative was designed to restore functionality while long-term system improvements are being implemented.

He did not provide timelines on the duration of the pilot but assured the public that services were accessible.

The resumption comes at a crucial time for parents who require IDs for school registration, passport applications, access to healthcare services and other administrative processes that depend on valid identification.

Members of the public have been observed visiting Home Affairs offices to apply for new IDs, replace lost documents and collect processed cards.

The ministry has not yet announced whether service hours will be extended to accommodate increased demand. Home Affairs has previously experienced service interruptions linked to system and operational challenges.

The current pilot is expected to test solutions aimed at stabilising service delivery before wider implementation.

Applicants have been advised to arrive with all required documentation, including birth certificates and any supporting records, to ensure smooth processing.

The ministry has also encouraged the public to monitor official communication platforms for updates once the formal statement is issued.

Dlamini reiterated that official information regarding ID services would only be shared through verified government channels. He cautioned against relying on informal sources for updates related to application procedures or system availability.

The ministry is expected to outline the scope of the pilot project, operational capacity and any transitional measures in its forthcoming statement.
