Minister for Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jane Mkhonta-Simelane has announced that Eswatini is expected to receive heavy rainfall on Friday.

urging residents to take necessary precautions in anticipation of potential flooding. The Meteorological Service’s forecast comes as Southern Africa continues to experience elevated rainfall patterns.

Speaking at a briefing in Mbabane, Minister Mkhonta-Simelane highlighted the need for heightened vigilance, particularly in communities located in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

“We have reliable forecasts indicating sustained heavy rainfall in the coming days. Our priority is to ensure that all citizens are informed, prepared, and able to safeguard their families, property and livelihoods,” said Jane.

Recent weather data indicates that Eswatini has already recorded above-average rainfall this season. While official national statistics show cumulative rainfall figures rising by more than 20 per cent above the five-year average in key regions, neighbouring Mozambique has reported significant impacts from ongoing rains.

In Mozambique, recent downpours have damaged infrastructure and led to loss of life in several provinces, prompting emergency response measures and support efforts.

The Minister urged communities to pay close attention to weather advisories issued by the Eswatini Meteorological Services and to follow guidance from the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and local authorities.

She noted that preparations are underway to ensure that evacuation protocols, shelter facilities and emergency response teams are ready to mobilise if conditions worsen.

Meanwhile critical infrastructure inspections have been stepped up in flood-vulnerable zones, and public service announcements are being disseminated to encourage preparedness measures such as securing loose property, stocking essential supplies and avoiding travel through flooded roads.

Minister Mkhonta-Simelane also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the NDMA, the Meteorological Services, regional administrations and local disaster committees in strengthening early warning systems and response mechanisms.

“Information and preparedness are key to reducing risk and protecting lives,” she said.

Public institutions, private enterprises and community organisations have been urged to review business continuity plans and ensure the safety of employees and clients during the forecast period.

The Minister reinforced that proactive action today can mitigate the potential economic and social disruption that heavy rains may bring.

Eswatini’s government is expected to issue further updates as the rainfall event approaches, and residents are encouraged to remain attentive to official channels for the latest guidance and advisories.
