The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) and the University of Zululand (UNIZULU) have entered into a major partnership aimed at strengthening higher education, expanding student opportunities and accelerating research collaboration across the southern African region.

The two institutions on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at UNESWA’s Kwaluseni Campus, in a move seen as a strategic push to position universities as engines of regional development, innovation and skills production.

The agreement is expected to open doors for staff exchanges, student mobility programmes, joint academic projects and the sharing of institutional expertise between the two universities.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, UNESWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Justice M. Tfwala said the partnership represented far more than a formal agreement, describing it as a gateway to meaningful cooperation that could transform lives through education.

He said the visit by the University of Zululand delegation provided an important platform for engagement, reflection and identifying practical areas where the two institutions could work together for mutual benefit.

Professor Tfwala said UNESWA remained committed to its vision of being a sustainable public institution that impacts society and improves lives, while responding to both national and international needs through teaching, learning, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and community engagement.

He said such ambitions could not be realised in isolation, stressing that strategic partnerships with institutions such as UNIZULU were essential in building capacity and broadening impact.

“Today is not just a moment of formality, but a moment of possibility,” he said.

He added that by strengthening academic bonds, the institutions were advancing education through collaboration, mutual learning and a shared commitment to the development of knowledge and society.

Professor Tfwala urged both universities to ensure that the agreement translated into tangible outcomes rather than remaining a ceremonial document.

He said the focus should now shift towards practical questions, including how programmes could be aligned with industry demands, how joint solutions could be developed for regional challenges and how interdisciplinary cooperation across faculties could be deepened.

He noted that universities carry three core responsibilities – teaching, research and community engagement – and said these functions become stronger when institutions work together.

According to Professor Tfwala, collaboration would allow both universities to combine expertise, improve learning opportunities for students, generate relevant research and deliver innovative solutions to communities.

He described the signing ceremony as the beginning of a journey whose success would be measured through future actions such as joint curriculum development, collaborative research initiatives and expanded academic exchange programmes.

Representing the University of Zululand were Professor Allucia Shokane from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Professor Vezi Magigaba from the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Administration.
