Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is widely regarded as one of the architects of modern Qatar.
After assuming leadership in 1995, he oversaw an unprecedented period of economic transformation, using the country’s vast natural gas reserves to diversify the economy, modernise infrastructure and improve the quality of life of Qatari citizens.
During his tenure, Qatar emerged as a major global diplomatic and economic player.
The country invested heavily in education, healthcare, research and innovation, while expanding its influence through international mediation efforts and strategic investments across the world.

His reign also saw the establishment and expansion of globally recognised institutions, including Education City, which hosts leading international universities, and the launch of Al Jazeera, the international news network that reshaped the global media landscape.
Qatar also developed world-class transport infrastructure and strengthened its position as one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas.
Sheikh Hamad voluntarily handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013, becoming one of the few Gulf leaders to oversee a peaceful and orderly transfer of leadership.
His decision was widely praised as an example of stable succession and forward-looking governance.
Prime Minister Dlamini said Eswatini stands in solidarity with Qatar during this difficult period.
“The Kingdom of Eswatini stands in solidarity with the Government and the People of the State of Qatar during this period of national mourning.
We pray that they may find strength and comfort in the enduring legacy of his life and service, and that his memory may continue to inspire generations to come.”
Eswatini and Qatar continue to enjoy cordial diplomatic relations, with both countries cooperating through bilateral engagements and international forums.
Qatar has become an increasingly influential partner in global development, humanitarian assistance and investment, while maintaining strong relations with countries across Africa.
