Kingdom urges SADC States to prioritise rehabilitation, reintegration
Eswatini has called on SADC Member States to treat correctional facilities as centres of transformation where human dignity is upheld and offenders are afforded opportunities to reform and reintegrate into society.
The call was made by Senior Superintendent Rainy Mefikanemvula Dlamini when officially opening a five-day SADC regional workshop on rehabilitation and reintegration at the Botswana Prison Staff College in Mahalapye, Botswana.
Dlamini was representing the Commissioner General of His Majesty’s Correctional Services, LaMakhosini Phindile Dlamini.
“Correctional facilities should be viewed as centres of transformation where human dignity is upheld and individuals are afforded opportunities to change and become productive members of society,” he said.
He told delegates that the workshop should be used as a platform to exchange experiences and identify practical solutions to common rehabilitation challenges facing Member States.
He stated that successful rehabilitation in one Member State contributes to the safety and stability of the entire SADC region.
The workshop is being held under the theme ‘Uniting for Rehabilitation and Reintegration: Strengthening Regional Partnerships for Safer and More Resilient Communities in SADC.’ It brought together Correctional, Prison and Penitentiary Services experts from across the SADC region.
The meeting follows the SADC Corrections/Prisons Sub-Committee meeting held in June 2026 and will run until 6 November 2026.
According to His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS), the workshop provides Member States with an opportunity to share best practices and develop practical strategies aimed at reducing reoffending, improving rehabilitation outcomes and building safer, more resilient communities.
