Schools are closing for the upcoming Christmas holidays today, Friday, 10 December 2021 and reopen on Tuesday, 11 January 2022. Schools close at a time when the number of COVID -19 cases are at their highest amongst school going children and the youth. The cases have surged to a record high since the start of the pandemic.

The announcement to close schools was made by the Minister of Education Lady Howard Mabuza on 07 December 2021. The Ministry of Education noted in appreciation all the efforts that parents and teachers have put towards the reopening of schools. Thanking all teachers for working tirelessly in helping learner’s acquire maximum knowledge and skills in the short time that schools have opened.

“I request all parents and guardians to encourage and support their children to study even during this holiday break. They need to create an enabling environment for their children to study. We therefore bank on their support in ensuring that learner’s engage more with their school work at all times”, said Minister Mabuza.

She also encouraged learner’s to take this holiday break as an opportunity for them to revise their school work and study further in preparation for their examinations.
