Two men arrested for Dagga worth E700 000

By Phephile Motau

South African police have nabbed dagga worth E700 000 coming from Eswatini. This is according to a statement released by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Two suspects aged 29 and 34 were arrested with 479 kgs of dagga on Wednesday morning. According to the report, members from Visible Policing in Sabie were conducting a stop and search operation when they stopped a white Hyundai H1 with foreign registration number plates.

Upon searching the vehicle, they found 14 plastic bags of dagga sealed with masking tape. The dagga weighed about 479 kgs and it is estimated at more than E700 000 in street value.

“During preliminary investigation, it transpired that the luggage was from the Kingdom of Eswatini and further investigation will hopefully reveal its destiny,” the report reads.

The suspects are expected to make their first court appearance today at the Sabie Magistrate’s Court for dealing in dagga. The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela reportedly commended members for their notable success.

The General further emphasised that people must not make the mistake of taking Mpumalanga Province as an easy passage for narcotics and other illicit substances.
