Mavela Vilane has officially been unveiled as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Maize Corporation. He was officially unveiled by the Minister of Agriculture Jabulani Mabuza on Friday.

Vilane who has been holding fort since January 1, was unveiled together with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Shelley Kenny-Motsa. Mabuza said the Ministry, through the active role of the Board of Directors for the NMC, have been working hard to fill in the positions.

“As you are all aware these are critical executive positions and it requires due diligence and care in selecting the right and most suitable candidates to take up these responsibilities. Today we are excited to announce that we have filled in the positions”, the minister said.

Mabuza said they were hopeful that with these new executives appointments, the NMC would be transformed into a more agile government agency to deliver on the mandate of ensuring that the country is food secure in terms of its staple food which is white maize and other grains.

“The Ministry’s target in this regard is to attain self-sufficiency in white maize production, that is producing 140 000 metric tones per year and increase our maize stocks to meet local demand in times of disaster,” he said.

He urged all stakeholders in the grain industries to welcome and cooperate with the new leadership of NMC as they take up their responsibilities.

“It is worth mentioning that the goal of attaining food security, in this case considering the local production and marketing of white maize; requires leadership from both the public side and all players in the value chain,” Mabuza said.

He said the NMC therefore, through her leadership needed to fully recognise this and utilise available structures and platforms to build an objective coalition and collaborations towards the attainment of this goal.

“This is over and above the due prudence and care that we have to practice within the cooperation to improve efficiencies and accountability. With these remarks I wish you both success as you deliver on your responsibilities,” Mabuza concluded.
