SA Bucs legend, John Moeti passes on

Former South Africa and Orlando Pirates Football Club anchor midfielder, John ‘Dungi’ Moeti has passed on. The 55-year-old Moeti was part of the ‘Bucs’ team which played the then-Eswatini soccer giants Eleven Men Inflight in a CAF Champions League first-round match in 1994 on the way to winning the biggest club continental prize in 1995.



The Soweto Buccaneers won 5-0 on aggregate having won the first leg at Somhlolo National Stadium 3-0 and 2-0 in the second leg played at the old FNB Stadium. In a report carried by SA’s City Press, ‘Dungi, as he was affectionately known by his legions of fans, had been receiving specialist medical care for the past eight months.



The family confirmed his passing in a brief statement. “It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John ‘Dungi’ Moeti. John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care,” part of the family statement read.
