Budget Speech set for next week

By Ntombi Mhlongo

Following the opening of Parliament, MPs are hitting the ground running with the national Budget Speech set to follow next week.

This was announced at the State Opening of the 5th Session of the 11th Parliament on Friday. As has been the case in previous years, the Budget Speech follows after the King has delivered the Speech from The Throne which marks the official opening of Parliament.

During the Budget Speech, Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg is expected to announce the national budget for the financial year 2023/2024. He will outline the allocations for the various ministries, departments and projects which are part of the government’s plans for the coming financial year.

He is also expected to outline how the government plans to transform the economy. Last year, he delivered a Budget Speech whose theme was ‘Transformation through economic sustainability’ and mentioned that the government was doing all the work to transform governance and that the financial position was starting to bear fruit.

At the time, he said by addressing leakages and fixing economic policies that have failed over years of misuse and inefficiency, the country would see the economy and welfare of citizens thrive.
