At least 35 injured in KZN pileup

By Bahle Gama

At least 35 people have been injured in the multi-crash that occurred on the M41 highway at Umhlanga, KwaZulu Natal on Monday morning.

This was after a fully laden truck ploughed into 46 vehicles in peak-hour traffic. According to News24, the accident happened just before 8:00 am, at the M41 on-ramp towards the M4 southbound.

The stretch of the M41 in Umhlanga, north of Durban, reportedly resembled a scrapyard on Monday morning, as cars were crumbled some on top of each other.

Others were reportedly scattered on the roads after occupants were attended to by several emergency services personnel who rushed to the scene.

According to media reports, the road remained closed for the better part of Monday as the Durban South African Police Service’s accident unit was in attendance, investigating the events that led up to the crash.

In an interview with SA media, Emer-G-Med Spokesperson Kyle van Reened said the substance being hauled by the truck at the time the accident occurred had not yet been identified.

“The eThekwini Fire Department has secured the scene until confirmation is made that it is safe,” he said.

Police are reported to have not immediately responded to queries about the truck driver.
