By Ntokozo Magongo

Lubombo Marathon organisers have been given a boost with a donation of E20 000 by Mula Sport for the race that will be held on April 1.

The local betting company handed over the cheque on Monday morning during a launch of the marathon at Sigwaca House, Mbabane. Mula Sport joins other companies which have partnered with TZD Sports to host a successful race.

TZD Sports Chairman Zakhele said other companies are the Bible Society based in Mahlanya, Inyoni Africa a South African company sponsoring the 21.1km prize money, Dixies International and Swazi Auctioneers among others.

“We are happy that there are already some businesspeople from the Lubombo region that have already committed to partner with us in support of the marathon. These are George Investments, Lokuhle Transport and Tit-For-Tat Transport,†he said.

The Lubombo Marathon suffered the documented effects of the Covid-19 pandemic which grounded the entire globe in a way that was never seen before.

Dlamini said this occurred after they had successfully held the maiden edition in 2019, which showed glimpses of a greater future going forward until the pandemic struck.

The race will feature 42km, 21km and 10km. The 42km will start at the Siteki Sports Ground to Mhlumeni Border Gate. The 21km and the 10km will start at Mhlumeni Border Gate and athletes will be transported from the Siteki Sports Ground to the starting points.

Dlamini said registration is structured to accommodate all sectors and they have decided to have one fixed amount regardless of the race category.

The entire race category will be E150 per runner and those without 2023 running licences will pay an extra E30 for a temporary one through Athletics Eswatini. The prize breakdown has been structured to award the top five in the 42km.
