The University of Western Cape is traumatized and saddened to learn of the murder of one of its students Kamva Dasi.

In a statement by the university’s deputy vice-chancellor, student development and support, the tertiary institution stated that it was devastated by the death of the student adding that, “his young life was cut short.”

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday night, Aril 29 in Belhar, where he was fatally shot during a suspected robbery.

“This is now a matter of the South African Police Services. The university will, as always cooperate with the SAPS.”

The tertiary institution has further stated that it reached out and is in contact with his immediate family adding that the campus community, including students and staff, is in a state of grief.

“Counselling has been offered to all affected and our support will be provided in all instances. Fellow Students who may need professional and confidential counselling and psychological services can contact the Centre for student support services (CSSS),” reads the statement.

In 2015, a 23-year-old BSc Computer Science and Physics student Chris Tabang Kgashane was also found dead in Belhar. It was a murder related to a mugging, whereby he was reportedly mugged of his laptop and other items.

Rumours were circulating at the time that Kgashane had been on his way from writing his exam at the Bellville Velodrome, however, the university refuted those claims.

“The university can confirm that this is not true, he was due to write his Physics exam on December 2, 2015.” In 2021, two other students were murdered.

Uyinene Mrwetyana

On August 24, 2021, Uyinene Mrwetyana was found dead after she was raped and killed at Claremont Post Office. Her body was dumped at Khayelitsha. Meanwhile, Jesse Hesse and her grandfather were reportedly found dead in their Parrow Flat on August 30, 2021.
