‘Anyone who impregnates a learner should be punished’

By Thokozani Mazibuko

To arrest the scourge of teenage pregnancy in the country and schools, Senior Community Policeman Jabulani Dlamini has called upon Parliamentarians to enact a new law to punish those found guilty.

This law would not only hold teachers accountable for relationships leading to student pregnancies but also extend the consequences to all civil servants.

Most recently, the Ministry of Education said in a statement that teachers will be fired for impregnating pupils.

“Why are teachers being singled out whereas we have had cases whereby police, Correctional Officers, Army Officers and even senior government officials have impregnated pupils?” Dlamini questioned.

The prevalence of teenage pregnancy in Eswatini schools is a growing concern, prompting calls for stricter measures to protect vulnerable pupils.

With reports indicating a disturbing trend, there is an urgent need for action to safeguard the well-being and future prospects of these young individuals.

Senior Community Policeman Dlamini emphasized the importance of holding all individuals in positions of authority accountable for their actions.

By extending the repercussions beyond just teachers to all civil servants, the proposed law seeks to create a safer environment for students and deter inappropriate relationships that can have lasting consequences.

The potential impact of such a law could be significant in promoting ethical conduct and safeguarding the rights of pupils.

As discussions unfold in Parliament regarding this proposed legislation, all eyes are on the lawmakers to take decisive action in the best interests of the youth of Eswatini.
