Ministry of Natural Resources announces World Water Day 2024 commemoration

By Ncaba Ntshakala

On March 22nd every year since 1993, the world comes together to celebrate World Water Day, an annual event aimed at advocating for the preservation and management of water resources.

This global initiative, backed by the United Nations, serves as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of fresh water for our planet and the urgent need to combat its scarcity worldwide.

In line with this year’s theme, “Water for Peace,” the United Nations is emphasizing the role of water management as a conduit for peace.

The theme underscores the benefits of effective water management in enhancing cooperation and preventing water-related disputes.

This resonates strongly with Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure clean water and sanitation for all.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy, in collaboration with UN agencies, and local, and international water and sanitation partners, will commemorate World Water Day on March 27th, 2024, at the Mavuso Trade Centre in Manzini.

This event serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the progress made in adhering to Sustainable Development Goal 6, specifically focusing on “Clean Water and Sanitation for All.”

Speaking about the significance of this year’s theme, the Ministry highlighted the importance of water in fostering peace and cooperation.

By showcasing effective mechanisms and tools for water management, the aim is to prevent conflicts arising from water scarcity and ensure equitable access to this vital resource.

The commemoration of World Water Day also serves as a platform to address the clean water crisis facing many parts of the world.

With the release of the World Water Development Report each year, the United Nations underscores the relevance of water and the pressing need for sustainable management practices.

In addition to advocating for water conservation and management, World Water Day is about spreading awareness regarding the clean water crisis.

By highlighting the challenges and opportunities in ensuring access to clean water for all, the event seeks to mobilize action at both local and global levels.
