Ministry of Natural Resources calls for action during Earth Hour 2024 commemoration

By Ncaba Ntshakala

As the world observed Earth Hour 2024, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Kingdom of Eswatini joined the global community in commemorating this annual event under the theme “Make this the biggest hour for Earth, give an hour for Earth.”

The commemoration was held at House on Fire in Malkerns.

Earth Hour, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about climate change, encourages individuals and businesses to switch off lights and non-essential appliances for one hour.

Speaking through the Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Jane Mkhonta-Simelane, the Minister of Natural Resources, HRH Prince Lonkhokhela, emphasised the critical importance of immediate action to address the challenges posed by climate change.

Minister Mkhonta-Simelane reiterated the global imperative to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and to reduce emissions without delay.

“We need to urgently pursue technologies and innovations, which will accelerate the green transition,” stated Minister Mkhonta-Simelane.

“Everyone has a major role to play, the private sector and all the citizens at all societal levels.”

The Minister further highlighted the necessity for Eswatini to address energy accessibility and self-sufficiency concerns. “As a nation, we need to cater for the remaining 18% of the Emaswati who are still not connected to the grid, and we need to ensure self-sufficiency as a country,” she explained.

To achieve these goals, the Minister outlined a strategy focused on a balanced mix of renewable energy solutions. “Hence, a balanced mix of solutions like solar, wind farms, thermal power, and modern grids are the future of the country,” she emphasized.

Earth Hour, an annual event observed globally, serves as a powerful symbol of unity and collective action in the fight against climate change.

Held on the last Saturday of March each year, Earth Hour encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential lights and appliances for one hour, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time.

This simple yet impactful gesture aims to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing our planet, particularly the urgent need to address climate change.

By dimming the lights, participants demonstrate their commitment to reducing energy consumption and mitigating the impacts of carbon emissions on the environment.

What began as a grassroots movement in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 has since grown into a global phenomenon, with millions of people from over 190 countries participating each year.

From iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris to bustling city streets and remote villages, Earth Hour transcends geographical boundaries, uniting people of all backgrounds in a shared mission to protect the planet.

During Earth Hour, communities around the world organize various activities and events to mark the occasion.

These may include candlelit gatherings, stargazing sessions, nature walks, and discussions on environmental sustainability.

Through these activities, participants not only raise awareness about climate change but also inspire others to adopt more sustainable lifestyles and advocate for policy changes that prioritize environmental conservation.

Beyond the symbolic gesture of switching off lights, Earth Hour catalyzes broader environmental action. It prompts individuals and organizations to reflect on their carbon footprint and explore ways to reduce energy consumption in their daily lives
