REPS clarifies questioning of Thulani’s wife

By Ncaba Ntshakala

The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) has addressed critical aspects of the investigation into the murder of human rights activist Thulani Maseko, shedding light on recent events surrounding the case.

The statement, issued by Acting National Commissioner of Police Lydia Dlamini, responds to what it describes as “misguided furore,” and particularly focuses on the intended questioning of Maseko’s wife, Tanele Maseko, by the police on March 27, 2024.

According to REPS, following the murder of Thulani Maseko, comprehensive investigations were launched, initially involving the collection of a preliminary statement from his wife, who was the sole adult present at the time of the incident.

Subsequent attempts to obtain further information from Tanele Maseko were met with resistance, with the police highlighting instances where she failed to cooperate or failed to appear for scheduled meetings, despite agreeing to do so.

Furthermore, Maseko allegedly refused to surrender her and her late husband’s mobile phones, which the police deemed crucial for the investigation.

The statement details the events of March 27, 2024, when Mrs Maseko returned to Eswatini through the Ngwenya Border Post and was subsequently requested by the police to proceed to the Police Headquarters in Mbabane for questioning regarding her husband’s murder.

To ensure compliance and prevent evasion, she was asked to surrender her travel document and mobile phone, which she agreed to do. At the headquarters, accompanied by her children and legal representatives, Maseko’s wife was briefed on the purpose of her summons, and the engagement lasted less than an hour.

Police argue that she was never detained during this process.

Subsequently, an agreement was made to reconvene at the Manzini Police Regional Headquarters on March 28 at noon. However, disagreements arose regarding the interview process, with Tanele Maseko insisting that all individuals accompanying her should be present during the interview, contrary to police protocols.

The statement further expresses the government’s commitment to resolving Maseko’s murder and the importance of his wife, Tanele Maseko’s cooperation in providing vital information for the investigation.

It also stresses the urgency of the matter, given the inquiries from international organizations and partners.

Moreover, the Royal Eswatini Police Service emphasizes the need for all parties involved to respect the ongoing investigation and allow for a professional, independent, and impartial process to unfold.

The police reaffirm their dedication to leaving no stone unturned until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
