The recent surge in drinking and driving incidents has prompted Magistrate Sifiso Vilakati to issue a strong warning against the dangerous act.
With over 188 individuals arrested over the Easter weekend alone, the Magistrate expressed his concern during court proceedings at the Mbabane Magistrate’s Court.
In a firm tone, Magistrate Vilakati emphasized the alarming trend of habitual drinking and driving, stating, “We have been saying the same thing week in and week out. It is tiring and disheartening. The bad thing is that the numbers keep on increasing.”

Highlighting the economic challenges faced by many individuals, Vilakati pointed out that despite financial hardships, people still choose to risk their lives and the lives of others by driving under the influence. “You have money to buy beers, drive, and be arrested.
Why would you? The court is full of people charged with the same offence. It is disheartening,” he lamented.
Drawing attention to the repercussions of drinking and driving, the Magistrate underscored the potential consequences of being in custody and the impact on one’s family and livelihood.
“Is it worth it? Being in custody away from your family, all just because of alcohol? Some of you even risk your work. The choice is yours, think about your dependents,” he urged.

In a plea for responsible behaviour, Vilakati questioned some accused persons on their readiness to bear the financial burden of fines and implored them to consider the broader effects of their actions.
“If you were to think about the effects of all this, you would reconsider before jumping to the steering of a car, knowing so well that you have imbibed alcohol.
The police are always on the road,” he concluded, urging individuals to drink responsibly and prioritize the safety of themselves and others on the road.
