Son confesses before Magistrate for killing parents

The 36-year-old man who was arrested for allegedly killing his parents in Maphungwane has confessed to the crime. He appeared before Siteki Magistrate, Lungile Shongwe on Monday.

Maphungwane is geographically located at the heart of Matsanjeni North Constituency in the Lubombo Region.

The suspect, Jabulani Ndumiso Maziya appeared before Siteki Magistrate, Lungile Shongwe.

According to the charge sheet, the accused person was charged with the offence of murder, in that upon or about the 10th of May 2024 at or near Maphungwane area in the Lubombo Regio,

The said accused person did unlawfully and intentionally killed one Mario Sithole and thus did commit the crime of murder.

Parent alleged killer

In count two the accused person was charged with the offence of murder, in that upon or about the 10th of May 2024 at or near the Maphungwane area in the Lubombo Region,

The said accused person unlawfully and intentionally killed one Busisiwe Gamedze and thus committed the crime of murder.

The accused confessed before the Magistrate in the chambers and was remanded back to custody at Big Bend Correctional Centre until 20 May 2024 while awaiting committal to the high court.

Not so long ago, the REPS reported that the Kingdom of Eswatini recorded a 20 per cent decrease in the murder rate in the previous year.

This was disclosed in the Royal Eswatini Police Services (REPS) 2023/24 performance report.

The REPS reported that the killing of another continues to be a cause for concern as during the reporting period, 183 cases were recorded against 231 cases reported in the same period last year.

This translated to a decrease of 20.8 per cent. Breakthroughs have been made in murder cases with a total of 189 suspects arrested in connection with the crimes.

The report stated that most of the murder cases emanate from, amongst other things, family disputes and gender-based violence, abuse of alcohol, dagga wars, mob justice as well as forced ingestion of poisonous substances.

“A multi-faceted approach is necessary to curb this scourge of crime,” reads the report.

However, other crimes such as rape showed an increase over the same period under review.
