The Salesians of Don Bosco celebrated a major milestone on Friday as they marked their 70th anniversary in Eswatini.

The Platinum Jubilee celebration, saw Minister of Education and Training Owen Nxumalo representing Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini as the guest of honour.

The Minister urged teachers and learners to continue the legacy of Saint John Bosco, the founder of the education centre.

Minister Nxumalo conveyed the Prime Minister’s sincere apologies for his absence due to pressing national duties and extended his warm congratulations to the Salesians for their remarkable journey over the past seven decades.

“Today, we celebrate a monumental achievement for the Salesians of Don Bosco in Eswatini,” began Nxumalo.

“Reaching 70 years is no mean feat by any means, which is why I find it befitting to congratulate the Salesians of Don Bosco in Eswatini for reaching this milestone.

” The Minister emphasized that the jubilee is not merely a reflection of the passage of time but a testament to lives transformed, spirits uplifted, faith deepened, and communities strengthened.

Nxumalo highlighted the impact of the Salesian community and noted that approximately 12,000 young minds enter the Salesian gates each morning.

“This is a testament to the enduring vision and dedication of the Salesian community in nurturing young minds and spirits,” he said, acknowledging the missionary journey of the Salesians in Eswatini.

He praised the vibrant missionary phase that sowed seeds of faith and education across the nation but also pointed out the need to rekindle the flame of vocation in the hearts of the youth.

“It is imperative to address this and inspire a new generation to carry forward this sacred calling,” he urged.
Nxumalo expressed the core mission of the Salesians which includes the instruction to be good Christians and good citizens.

He stressed the importance of giving priority to the things of God to strengthen new vocations within the Salesian Society.

Dedication to education was a recurring theme in his speech, as the Minister lauded the Salesians’ role in advancing educational practices to meet the evolving needs of the youth.

“Education was Don Bosco’s gift to the world, and it remains our most potent tool for change,” Nxumalo stated.

He called for ensuring that educational practices remain relevant and empowering for every child and young adult.

Delving into the essence of the Salesian way, Nxumalo described it as more than a method; it is a philosophy that enriches lives.

He urged educators, former pupils, and all associated with the Salesians to embody and share this mentality, creating a ripple effect of positive change throughout society.

The cake which was designed for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“The Salesian way is a call to live with purpose, compassion, and joy,” he said, where he invited everyone to deepen their commitment to this way of life that beautifully blends faith with action.

The Minister called for unity in a shared vision where the Salesian ethos permeates every aspect of society.

He encouraged everyone to work together to ensure that the legacy of St. John Bosco continues to inspire and guide future generations.

“I call upon each one of you to be ambassadors of the Salesian spirit. Let us work together to nurture a society that reflects the values of respect, hard work, and compassion that Don Bosco himself championed,” he appealed.

Nxumalo expressed gratitude and addressed past pupils, current students, and the entire Salesian community where he acknowledged the significant contributions of Salesian-educated individuals to Eswatini, including three former Prime Ministers which are Dr. Absalom Themba Dlamini, the late Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini, and Cleopas Sipho Dlamini.

“Your journey stands as a testament to the enduring values instilled by the Salesians. May you continue to be ambassadors of this rich heritage,” he said.

He reminded current students that they are the bearers of hope and the architects of tomorrow’s Eswatini.

The Minister when concluding his remarks, congratulated the Salesians of Don Bosco on their 70th anniversary.

“May you continue to be a beacon of hope and shine your torch brighter for future generations to come.

His Majesty’s Government is proud of the strides you have made and for the positive impact you bring to the lives of emaSwati. Upwards and onwards, Salesians of Don Bosco!” he declared.
