Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg expressed the critical importance of tax compliance for every citizen of Eswatini during the Eswatini Revenue Services’ (ERS) 2nd edition of the Client Appreciation Day event, held last Friday.

The event celebrated the contributions of compliant taxpayers and highlighted the achievements of the ERS in the fiscal year 2023-2024.

Addressing the attendees, Minister Rijkenberg expressed gratitude to all businesses and individuals who have contributed to the nation’s fiscus through timely tax payments.

“The importance of tax compliance by every citizen of Eswatini can never be overemphasized.

The payment of taxes supports the government in delivering the much-required public services that will ensure the improved well-being of emaSwati and provide the infrastructure and services that will spur the growth of the economy,” he stated.

He further appreciated the major contributors being honored at the event, acknowledging their role in the country’s development.

“Today marks yet another historical milestone in tax administration for the kingdom of Eswatini.

Indeed, this is an extraordinary day where as a country we appreciate the public and thank all businesses that have played their role and contributed to the fiscus through the timely payments of taxes due in line with the country’s tax and customs laws,” Rijkenberg added.


The Minister highlighted the impressive performance of the ERS in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. Revenue collections for the year amounted to E13.024 billion,

surpassing the target of E13.009 billion and reflecting an 8.2 percent increase from the previous year. This represents a year-on-year increase of E986.79 million, or 1.2 percent of GDP, bringing the tax-to-GDP ratio to 15.4 percent.

“Collecting revenue that exceeds the estimated levels by ERS has helped ensure that the government receives the planned revenue.

The significant achievement reflects the deliberate and intensified efforts by the ERS to improve revenue collections through targeted mobilization initiatives and an unwavering commitment to being a customer-centric organization,” Rijkenberg noted.

The Minister also recognized the efforts of the ERS in improving tax policy and administration.

Specific developments included amendments to the income tax order to enhance tax administration and measures to manage tax debt, such as withholding VAT from government suppliers and the Sondzela Sikhulume campaign supporting taxpayers with tax debts.

Rijkenberg praised the ERS for its dedication to service excellence, evidenced by winning three categories in the Customer Service Awards and the ERS CFO receiving the CFO of the Year award in the Public Enterprise category from the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants Africa Charter.

“This recognition is a testament to the outstanding leadership and fiscal management within ERS,” he remarked.

From a customs perspective, the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) program has shown significant growth, with seven new clients registered this year.

The program facilitates smoother trade processes and enhances compliance, contributing to overall revenue administration efficiency.

“Tax compliance is not merely a legal obligation. It’s a civic duty that supports the infrastructure and services we all rely on,” Rijkenberg emphasized.

He highlighted the essential role of compliant taxpayers in funding services such as healthcare, education, and public safety, which foster a better quality of life for all emaSwati.

The Minister called on those still evading their tax responsibilities to recognize the vital role they play in the nation’s future and the collective benefits of compliance.

He extended heartfelt thanks to the ERS, the Governing Board, Management, and the Organizing Committee for their dedication in organizing the event.

“Your taxes are at work in our schools, road infrastructure, agriculture, elderly grants, security, and many more areas vital to our nation’s well-being,” he concluded.

In his closing remarks, Rijkenberg expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of His Majesty’s Government and all emaSwati.
