The Vice Chancellor of the University of Eswatini (UNESWA), Chief Mkhumbi Dlamini, has revealed to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that the institution is in dire need of over E450 million for a fencing and security project.
The disclosure comes in the wake of disturbing incidents where three students at UNESWA fell victim to rape due to inadequate security measures that allowed criminals to easily gain unauthorized access to the campus.

During the hearing before the PAC, Vice Chancellor Chief Mkhumbi Dlamini highlighted the urgency of upgrading the university’s security system considering the recent incidents of sexual violence.
The safety and well-being of students are paramount, and the alarming cases of rape underscore the critical need for immediate action to enhance security measures on campus.
“Chairperson, I would like to inform the PAC that due the poor security and fencing at the institution, three students were unfortunately raped by unscrupulous criminals who easily jumped into the facility and attacked the victims.
There is an urgent need for the fencing and security to be upgraded,” the Vice Chancellor told the PAC.
Moreover, according to the Vice Chancellor, the proposed fencing and security project, which requires substantial funding amounting to over E450 million,
aims to fortify the campus perimeter and implement advanced security technologies to prevent unauthorized entry and enhance the overall safety of students, staff, and visitors at UNESWA.
Chief Mkhumbi Dlamini stressed the importance of investing in robust security infrastructure to create a secure environment conducive to learning and ensure the protection of all individuals within the university community.

“The incidents of rape at UNESWA serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities and risks faced by students, particularly during late hours when criminal elements may pose a threat to their safety.
We will be engaging other ministries and stakeholders on the allocation of funds for the proposed security so to prioritize the protection and well-being of the university population and take decisive measures to address security concerns effectively,” the Chief pointed out.
The members of the PAC have made calls for swift action to address the security vulnerabilities at UNESWA and prevent further incidents of violence.
“The university administration, in collaboration with relevant authorities and stakeholders, must work diligently to implement comprehensive security measures and provide a safe environment that upholds the dignity and security of all individuals within the academic community,” Somntongo Member of Parliament, Sandile Nxumalo said.
