A sombre mood engulfed Matsapha Correctional Institution (MCCI) on Sunday morning as news of a shocking and untimely passing spread among inmates and prison officials.

The inmate, who had been serving his sentence at MCCI, failed to wake up on that fateful morning, leaving his fellow inmates and authorities reeling from the unexpected loss.

According to impeccable sources who spoke to Eswatini Daily News (EDN), the deceased inmate, identified as a male, had been battling a prolonged illness.

He had been receiving treatment and care at the prison’s clinic, where he was looked after by his fellow inmates.

Despite their efforts to support him during his illness, the inmate’s health took a turn for the worse, culminating in his tragic passing.

Gugulethu Dlamini, the Public Relations Officer for His Majesty’s Correctional Services, confirmed the news of the inmate’s death.

While details surrounding the circumstances of his passing remain unclear, the loss of a member of the prison community has deeply impacted both inmates and staff at MCCI.

The inmate’s passing has underscored the need for improved healthcare and support services within prisons to ensure the well-being and dignity of all individuals under their care.

It should be mentioned that as the prison community mourns the loss of one of their own, thoughts and condolences pour in from both within and outside the walls of Matsapha Correctional Institution.
