Taiwan, a true friend to Eswatini

The Republic of China on Taiwan has cemented its long and unbroken diplomatic relations of 51 years with Eswatini with nine projects within the month of June alone.

The relationship between the two countries is based on mutual respect, friendship and loyalty. Both countries engage at a level of equal partnership based on an understanding and appreciation of respective profound cultural and traditional systems.

In the month of June 2024, the Taiwan government donated a sum of E1 million to the End Malaria Fund to help Eswatini fight Malaria.  Furthermore, the Taiwan Government sponsored nine Eswatini companies to participate in the Food Taipei Mega Shows in a bid to promote Eswatini products globally.

According to an article posted on the Taiwan Embassy website, the Embassy and Medical Mission conducted free medical outreaches in Madlangampisi and Mdutshane, serving over 1,400 emaSwati and donating bags of rice.

“The Taiwan Embassy and Medical Mission revisited the Malindza Refugee Centre, donating rice, clothes and blankets while promoting daily healthcare awareness. Also, the Taiwan Technical Mission partnered with the Ministry of Health to launch a Chronic Disease Health Education Programme on the Voice of Church radio station every Friday morning,†reads the statement in part on the website.

It further states that the Taiwan-Africa Vegetable Initiative partnered with 16 eSwatini primary schools to develop vegetable gardens and provide nutrition education.

“The Taiwan Technical Mission also trained women to use laser engraving machines to create high-quality, customized products that are sold at good prices. The Taiwan Technical Mission conducted sessions on advanced techniques for strawberry cultivation for 35 Ngwenya vegetable farmers. More Swazi fish farmers achieved abundant harvests under the guidance of the Taiwan Technical Mission,†the statement reads.

Taiwan and the Kingdom of Eswatini signed a joint statement on May 21 in Taipei City to reaffirm their solid diplomatic relationship. His Majesty King Mswati III and Taiwan President Lai Ching-te watched with glee as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Pholile Shakantu and Taiwan Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung displayed the joint statement at the Presidential Office at the Taipei.

The two countries are dedicated to enhancing cooperation in areas spanning agriculture, education, investment, medical care, mutual legal assistance, public health, trade, vocational training, women’s empowerment and youth employment as well as combating cross-border crime and preventing information manipulation.

According to the MOFA, the accord signed on May 21, 2024, is the first collaboration document signed with an ally since Lai took office. It demonstrates the deep friendship between the two sides and Eswatini’s staunch support for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
