The entertainment industry mourns the loss of Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, the dynamic founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards and beloved presenter on Ukhozi FM.
The news of her passing on Monday morning at Parklands Hospital has sent shockwaves through the nation, as friends, family, and fans remember her contributions to gospel music and broadcasting.
The announcement came through a statement issued by her husband, Bishop Mpendulo Nkambule.
“It is with a heavy heart that we, the Nkambule and Mbokazi family, announce the passing of our dearly beloved Ms Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule,” he shared, emphasizing the impact she had on the lives of many.
“We are grateful for all the prayers, love, and support we received throughout her illness. The family would appreciate privacy as we navigate through this challenging time.”
Mbokazi-Nkambule’s journey in the spotlight shone through when she founded the Crown Gospel Music Awards, an event that has become synonymous with celebrating the best in gospel music.
With her unwavering passion for uplifting local talent, she created a platform that recognized the contributions of gospel artists, fostering a sense of community and inspiration within the industry.
Her vision was clear: to honour the power of gospel music, which resonated deeply with the hearts of many South Africans.
Her vibrant personality and energy were showcased in her role as a presenter on Ukhozi FM, where she connected with listeners through her show ‘Eshilo.’
Unfortunately, on April 21, 2024, Mbokazi-Nkambule’s health began to decline, forcing her to cut short her show due to voice challenges.

Colleague Thokozani MaMkhize Ndlovu stepped in to fill her shoes, unaware that this was a precursor to the devastating news to come.
It was later revealed that Mbokazi-Nkambule had undergone minor surgery for shortness of breath, which led to the heartbreaking announcement of her lung cancer diagnosis.
In an emotional social media post, she described this period as the ‘toughest moment of her life,’ revealing the struggles she faced in her fight against the disease.
Despite the challenges, Mbokazi-Nkambule remained an unwavering beacon of hope for her fans and loved ones, often sharing messages of resilience and faith.

With the news of Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule’s passing spreading, a wave of sadness and nostalgia washed over. Mrs Nkambule ran her race with confidence, she finished her course and fought a good fight of faith. She left an indelible mark on all of us and taught us to redeem time and live purposefully.
A valuable life never to be forgotten. The impact she made is desirable. She left seeds of greatness in every person she met. May she rest gracefully in the hands of our Father in heaven.
