The lively atmosphere at St. Theresa’s has created a great setting for innovation and entrepreneurship, as more than 30 schools from across Eswatini came together for the highly anticipated Junior Achievement (JA) Regional competitions.

With the theme of green innovation, students are presenting their innovative products and pitching their business ideas to a distinguished panel of judges, all competing for the chance to represent their nation on an international stage.

According to Junior Achievement’s Siphesihle Mkhonta, the competition has transformed into a showcase of creativity and visionary thinking, with participants presenting projects focused on sustainability and environmental awareness.

As the four regions of the country compete fiercely for a place among the top five that will advance to the National competition, the stakes are higher than ever.

The grand prize—the opportunity to represent Eswatini at the prestigious Africa Create Our Youth (COY) conference in Mauritius—has sparked an electric atmosphere of ambition and determination.

Throughout the day, the judges were scrutinizing each presentation meticulously, evaluating not only the viability of the ideas but also the passion and commitment displayed by the young entrepreneurs.

The tension in the room is palpable as aspiring innovators take turns speaking, defending their concepts, and sharing their visions for a more sustainable future.

“This year’s competition has been one of the most intense yet,” remarked Julia Mthethwa, head of the judging panel and a prominent figure in the local business community.

“The level of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated by these young minds is truly inspiring. It gives us hope for the future of business and innovation in Eswatini.”

More projects being showcased by the competing pupils

It should be noted that as the day progresses, participants are not only competing for recognition but also gaining invaluable experience in pitching, teamwork, and critical thinking—skills that will serve them well in their future endeavors.

“Being part of this competition has taught me so much about presenting ideas and working as a team,” said Thandiwe Mkhabela, a student from Manzini High School.

“We’ve put our hearts into this project, and we hope the judges can see our passion.”

The community has turned out in support, with teachers, parents, and local businesses encouraging the students and fostering an environment of collaboration and excitement around the spirit of innovation.

As participants showcase their solutions to pressing environmental issues, the competition also serves as a platform for raising awareness about sustainability among the youth.

As the judges evaluate the final presentations, the anticipation builds for the announcement of the top five schools—a defining moment that will unveil which innovators will advance to the national stage.

“This is just the beginning for us,” said one pupil, a representative from one of the participating schools. “No matter the outcome, we are committed to making a difference in our community.”
