Senator Chief Prince Mphatfwa issued a stern warning to Minister of Housing and Development, Appollo Maphalala, during the Ministry’s appearance before the Portfolio Committee on Wednesday.

The Senator emphasized the urgent need to address equipment problems and shortages within the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services (ENFRES) to prevent potential economic setbacks caused by devastating fires.

“The burning of Bhunu Mall and other government and privately owned structures by fires is a clear indication that something is amiss in the ENFRES,” Senator Chief Prince Mphatfwa asserted.

He pointed out that during the recent fire incident at Bhunu Mall, ENFRES officers were reportedly unable to contain the blaze effectively due to outdated or insufficient equipment.

The Senator’s remarks underscore a pressing concern regarding the operational capacity and readiness of the ENFRES in responding to fire emergencies.

“The inability to effectively combat fires, as evidenced by incidents such as the Bhunu Mall fire, raises critical questions about the adequacy of resources and the level of preparedness within the national firefighting and emergency response services,” the Senator pointed out.

It is worth noting that Senator Chief Prince Mphatfwa’s call for immediate action to rectify equipment shortages and upgrade outdated tools within the ENFRES reflects a deep-seated concern for public safety and the protection of both government and private properties.

The Senator’s warning of potential economic ramifications in the event of continued deficiencies in fire response capabilities signals a need for swift and comprehensive intervention to fortify the nation’s firefighting infrastructure.

“The Bhunu Mall fire, where ENFRES officers reportedly faced challenges in extinguishing the flames, serves as a poignant example of the real-world consequences of inadequate equipment and resources in emergencies.

The inability to promptly and effectively respond to fire incidents not only jeopardizes lives and properties but also poses a significant threat to the overall economic stability and development of the nation,” the Chief pointed out.

It should be noted that Senator Chief Prince Mphatfwa’s admonition serves as a reminder of the critical importance of equipping and empowering firefighting personnel with the necessary tools and resources to carry out their life-saving duties effectively.

The Minister in response said procuring equipment for ENFRES is a priority in this financial year 2024/26.
