‘Gender should never be a barrier in any field of success’

In a significant move towards addressing gender imbalances in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, Prince Lonkhokhela, emphasized the importance of equality in educational and professional fields.

Speaking at the Junior Achievement Eswatini Job Shadowing program award ceremony held on Monday, he declared that gender should never be a barrier to success.

During the event, 42 enthusiastic pupils were awarded certificates for their participation in a transformative job shadowing experience, designed to provide young minds with a glimpse into the professional world.

Over the course of ten days, these pupils explored various career paths within reputable organizations including the Royal Eswatini Sugar Corporation (RSSC), Eswatini Water Services Corporation (EWSC), Nhlangano Town Council, and Manzini Municipality.

The programme, aimed at fostering practical understanding and skills amongst young learners, allowed participants to directly engage with industry professionals, gaining firsthand experience of the working environment. Minister Lonkhokhela remarked,

“This initiative sends a clear message that in our pursuit of development, we must ensure that our girls and boys are equally empowered, especially in fields that shape the future of our economy such as STEM.”

He further underscored that investing in the youth, particularly by bridging the gender gap in STEM, is vital for the country’s sustainable development.

The minister’s insights were echoed by other speakers at the event, who highlighted the successes and challenges faced by females in the traditionally male-dominated STEM sectors.

The future leaders under the Junior Achievement Eswatini who have made it through the Job Shadowing Program.

The Junior Achievement Eswatini program not only provided valuable experience but also aimed to inspire confidence among the pupils,

equipping them to pursue careers in fields where they have historically been underrepresented.

As they received their certificates, the joy and pride on the faces of the young participants were evident – a testament to the potential that lies within them.
