Motorists urged to use alternative routes

By Thokozani Mazibuko

Chief Police Information and Communication Officer, Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, has advised motorists to avoid the Mndobandoba Bridge in Big Bend due to overflowing waters.

The warning comes as heavy summer rains continue to batter the Lubombo Region, raising concerns about road safety and accessibility.

The overflowing of the Mndobandoba Bridge poses a risk to motorists and pedestrians alike.

The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), urge those traveling in the area to seek alternative routes until the situation stabilizes, emphasizing that safety must remain the top priority during this rainy season.

It should be noted that given the seasonal challenges brought on by torrential rains, residents and motorists across Eswatini are reminded of essential precautions to ensure their safety.

According to a general notice at the Eswatini Meteorological Services, motorists are advised to continuously monitor weather forecasts and local news updates for information on road conditions and safety advisories.

It is worth mentioning that National Meteorological Services provide timely alerts; staying informed can help with making necessary travel plans.

Further, drivers are advised to familiarize themselves with roads that are known to be prone to flooding. It’s best to avoid these routes entirely during heavy rainfall.

If you encounter flooded roads, turn around and find a safer alternative.

It should be noted that Eswatini is home to several rivers that may swell dangerously during rainy periods. Residents living near riverbanks are urged to be vigilant and evacuated if necessary to avoid potential flash floods.

Residents are encouraged to communicate and support one another, particularly in identifying and assisting vulnerable community members who may be at greater risk during the rainy season.

Residents are encouraged to heed the warnings issued by the REPS and to prioritize their well-being during this rainy season
