Eswatini Youth has been urged to take the leading role in championing the country’s adherence to human rights.

The challenge was thrown by United Nations (UN) Eswatini Resident Coordinator (RC) Amina Mohammed during the commemoration of Human Rights Day held at the Mountain View International Hotel in Mbabane on Tuesday.

The Eswatini Commission on Human Rights and Public Administration on Tuesday joined the world in commemorating the International Himan Rights Day.

The day also marked the 76 years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a timeless symbol of hope and a guide for justice and equality.

This year, under the theme “Fostering Collaboration to Advance Human Rights”, Mohammed said including the youth in promoting human rights in the country would ensure a bright future.

“This year’s theme reminds of the transformative power of young people. By equipping them with the knowledge and tools to champion human rights, we secure their future and strengthen the foundation for a more just and inclusive society,” Mohammed said.

Mohammed said the UN in Eswatini recognized the critical role of collaboration in achieving human rights goals.

The current UN Cooperation Framework which will conclude in 2025, has enabled them to work closely with Government, civil society and other partners.

“As we embark on developing the new framework for 2026-2030, I want to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that advancing human rights remains at the centre of our efforts,” she said.

Mohammed pleaded with the participants to draw inspiration from the recently adopted ‘Pact for the Future’ which underscored the world’s enduring commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“Let me end by reiterating the UN’s unwavering dedication to fostering partnerships, advancing human rights and building a just society.

We can turn today’s dialogue into actionable solutions that empower individuals, strengthen institutions and transform communities,” she said.
