A 31-year-old woman from Zombodze lost her life at the Mtilane River, spotlighting a concerning trend of increased drowning cases during this rainy season.
Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, the Chief Police Information and Communication Officer confirmed the tragic drowning incident on January 7, 2025.
The incident occurred at approximately 1400 hours when the victim was swept away while attempting to cross the swollen river, which has surged beyond its typical boundaries due to relentless rainfall.

Eyewitnesses reported that the river was particularly treacherous at the time, with strong currents making it extremely hazardous for pedestrians.
The REPS indicate that the heavy rains, a result of shifting weather patterns, have created dangerous conditions in many parts of the country.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued warnings about rising water levels in rivers and dams, urging residents to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary risks, particularly around bodies of water.
As communities across Eswatini navigate the challenges posed by heavy rainfall, officials are seeing a disturbing uptick in drowning incidents.
“We are experiencing an alarming rise in drowning cases this season,” stated Superintendent Vilakati. “Many of these tragedies could have been avoided if precautions were taken.
We urge everyone to stay away from rivers and streams until water levels recede and conditions improve.”
In response to the growing concern, the police have escalated their awareness campaigns, focusing on educating the public about water safety, especially for those living near rivers and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Local schools and community organizations are also being called upon to participate in educational programs aimed at preventing further tragedies.
Community members have expressed their grief and concern over the rising number of drownings.
“It’s heartbreaking to see our people losing their lives just because they did not heed warnings about the dangers posed by heavy rains,” lamented a local resident.

With weather forecasts predicting continued rainfall in the coming weeks, residents are advised to remain vigilant.
