The ongoing heavy rains that have swept across Eswatini have left a trail of destruction, displacing over 126 individuals from their homes, as reported by the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society.

The organization continues to assess the extent of damage in various regions, revealing alarming figures and a pressing need for humanitarian assistance.

Nontobeko Dlamini, the Society’s Communication Officer, shared those initial assessments focused on the Hhohho and Shiselweni regions, with further evaluations set to take place in the Lubombo and Manzini regions.

The areas’ hardest hit includes Nginamadvolo, where four houses were reported damaged, affecting 20 residents, and Nsangwini, which saw one house lost, impacting an additional five people.

Other severely affected areas include Hawane, Mpolonjeni, Corinte, and Mahwalala, which collectively account for a total of 61 individuals displaced.

In the Shiselweni region, the situation remains grim, with several homesteads, including those in Makhosini, eKhiza, eMahlalini, and Zombodze, reporting damage that has left around 65 people affected.

In response, the Red Cross has distributed essential relief supplies, including five tents, one tarpaulin, and two blankets, to assist those in need.

Dlamini noted the challenges faced during relief efforts at Mathendele, where the proximity of damaged houses and the presence of running water made it difficult to pitch tents for displaced families.

“We faced significant obstacles due to the close quarters of the falling houses, which hindered our relief response,” she explained.

“Assessments will continue today to evaluate the full scope of the damage.”

It should be noted that as heavy rain persists, the Baphalali Red Cross Society remains dedicated to addressing the emergency, calling for further support and resources to help affected communities recover and rebuild.

The situation serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather and the importance of community resilience in the face of natural disasters.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any new incidents of damage or flooding to local authorities to ensure a coordinated response during this critical time.

The Red Cross continues to mobilize efforts to provide relief and assistance, but the road to recovery will require collaboration and support from all sectors of society.

For those wishing to lend a helping hand, contributions can be made directly to the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society to assist in their ongoing emergency response efforts.
