To some the heavy rains are a blessing and a sign of a good harvest this year but to other families, this severe weather condition has brought distress due to the loss of lives.
Following the heavy rains that have battered the Southern African region, two young boys lost their lives in Eswatini, highlighting the devastating impact of the ongoing weather crisis.
According to Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, Chief Police Information and Communication Officer, the tragic event occurred on January 8, 2025.
At approximately 9am, rescue teams discovered the bodies of two boys, aged 9 and 10, buried under muddy soil in a donga (a steep-sided valley) in Gege.

“This is a devastating loss for the families involved and the community at large,” Superintendent Vilakati said.
“We urge residents to exercise extreme caution during these heavy rains to ensure their safety and the safety of children.”
The heavy rains have been a hallmark of recent weather patterns in the Southern African region, with Eswatini witnessing significant damage to roads and residential structures across all four regions.
The relentless downpours have caused mudslides, flash floods, and extensive infrastructural damage, rendering many areas inaccessible.
Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross continue to monitor the situation and are conducting assessments to address the immediate needs of affected communities.
Emergency services have been deployed in vulnerable areas, ready to assist residents in distress.
“We are urging everyone to stay alert for any announcements from authorities regarding safety measures and evacuation protocols, if necessary,” Superintendent Vilakati added.
Community leaders are holding meetings to discuss potential measures for disaster preparedness, emphasizing the importance of collective action in the face of such extreme weather conditions.
